Genet Kebede, founder and creative director of PARADISE Fashion, is one of the most well-known and popular fashion designers in Ethiopia.

After studying fashion design and garment construction in Italy and Argentina she decided to start her own company back home in Ethiopia where she would come to merge traditional Ethiopian cloth and fabrics with modern techniques and trends.

Inspired by her beloved Ethiopian “Hager Lebse (traditional Ethiopian cloth)” and the wonderful textiles of Ethiopia, Genet (Mimi) Kebede is making contemporary Ethiopian fashion and bridal wear for Ethiopian women at home and around the world.

Genet is a pioneer in Ethiopian fashion. She created her own label- Paradise Fashion- in 1992. Genet’s love of fashion started at school in her sewing class. But it was her wedding that really kick started her fashion career. Paradise Fashion took its name from the English translation of the owner’s name, Genet.

Designed to bring out the best from traditional hand woven fabrics, Paradise fashion has delighted many couture lovers. Genet’s creations have become must have wardrobe item. Free flowing lines, slits, low necks, and body embracing cloths offer a real tribute to women. Product lines include ladies formal wear, bridal wear & wedding accessories, embroidered evening dresses, trousers, shirts, and jackets coupled with flowing hand woven scarves and shawls. More down to earth designs allow for a trendy, more casual, late afternoon dressing. The distinctive embroideries and their range of colors capture the surrounding light.

I was immediately drawn to this awesome pictures and I love to see how Genet Kebede incorporates her heritage as an Ethiopian designer  in her work. The handcraft and simplicity of the designs is extraordinary.
