As an addition to the sustainable fashion-label landscape in Berlin, Marisa Fuentes Prado established her label ‘Maqu’ in 2015, based in the lovely neighbourhood of Berlin-Köpenick. Before she settled here and started working on her own collections, she gained valuable experience as a part of Henrik Vibskov’s design team in Copenhagen, followed by an internship at xXx-Berlin.
The native-born Peruvian already worked on sustainable fashion projects back in 2012, where she created T-shirts of re-used materials within her ‘Avant-Trash Project.’ This concept of re-using left-over fabrics got integrated within the label’s philosophy as a part of a broader view on sustainability. Further only high end quality, eco-friendly and recycled materials are used to compose each new collection alongside a few conventional fabrics.
Maqu designs practical, classic avant-garde clothing with a timeless appeal.
The collections are characterised by refined clean lines and comfortable shapes. The styles vary from casual chic to sportive wear appealing to a variety of customers looking for modern simplicity in their daily wardrobe. In 2016 Marisa started the ‘Maqu Green Project’.
For this project, art, design and practicability are combined with social and ecological and sustainability.
The collection only uses GOT-certified organic cotton and Tyvek, a 100% recyclable material produced by the company Dupont. Thus making this collection a balanced combination of organic and fashion-forward synthetic materials. The cooperation between Maqu and Dupont goes as far as all Tyvek pieces are able to be returned to the label which will then be recreated into new Tyvek material by Dupont.
Another matter of the heart for Marisa is a fair and local production of her garments. Her collections are partly produced in Cottbus (at the former GDR Textilkombinat) and tailor shops in her hometown Lima, making her travelling back and forth between Germany and Peru regularly to supervise the label’s production.
We exclusively work with producers and tailors that we know personally.
We pay great attention to the fact that our quality standards are met, and that working
conditions and a fair compensation for an adequate living standard.
During Berlin Fashion Week 2017 Maqu presented their 2018 summer clothing range named „Quipu“ which isn’t solely the name of the collection but likewise the designation for a 4000- year old Incan straps and ribbon language which Marisa investigated since 2016 while travelling Peru and through the world’s most extensive collection at the Museum for Ethnology in Berlin
Maqu received a lot of interest during Berlin Fashion Week as part of the very first held „NEO PERUVIAN DESIGN Pop-Up Showroom No. 1“ organised by the economics- and trade- office Peru in Berlin- Mitte.
Moreover Marisa’s label got nominated as one of five finalists for a mentoring program initiated by the Fashion Council Germany and senate of administration (for economics, energy and business, Projekt Zukunft Berlin and Frankfurt fair) to support sustainable Berlin labels. With this recognition Marisa sees her work and commitment for a fair and increasing usage of organically grown fibers acknowledged.
We’re looking forward to this constantly advancing label, following their exciting journey for the utmost compatibility for our environment.
