The Berlin-based label Umasan was founded in 2009 by twin sisters Anja and Sandra Umann who create vegan High End fashion for „the increased demands of the healthstyle generation“.
Next to animal-free and innovative materials they also look after an ecological, sustainable and socially responsible, local production – with their clothes being made in Germany. The timeles, ageless style of the collections is both elegant and nonchalant in the way they balance the art of Japanese pattern making with asymmetrical cuts and an eye for unique detail solutions.
Partly producing also modern yoga wear, the Umann’s seem to have a spiritual background of meditation practise that is reflected in the whole business concept – sharing values of integrity and environmentalism with partners. The basic colours black and white as well as the clear flowing lines of Umasan silhouettes stand for an unagitated approach to designing every-day clothing, that is suitable for different occasions – just like the German motto ‘there is strength in serenity’ implies.
I perceive their work as an avantgarde combination of ‘German’ practicability and ‘Asian’ wisdom and sensuality. The genders are merging in unisex fits and so-called androgynous looks, which is another remarkable feature.
The decision to use no wool, leather nor animal fibres is consequently applied in sourcing rather new and skin-friendly fabrics out of natural fibres like Tencel/Modal (cellulose), Seacell (algae) or such made of soy or bamboo – not to forget about organic cotton.
You can shop Umasan garments in their own online shop as well as paying a visit to the Berlin Flagship Store & Showroom on Linienstr. 40.
